Dr. Brian Wong

Dr. Wong is a specialist in facial plastic surgery with a practice that encompasses both aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. His research interests are in the field of biomedical engineering with specific interests in medical device development and laser applications in medicine. Dr. Wong has over 100 publications, and his research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and the Health Science Partners.

Dr. Govind Rajan

Dr. Govind Rajan is an anesthesiologist in Orange, CA and is affiliated with UC Irvine Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College and has been in practice for 29 years. He also speaks multiple languages, including Hindi. He specializes in critical care medicine.

Dr. Thomas Milner

Dr. Thomas Milner has worked in Biomedical Engineering and specifically biomedical optics for more than twenty-five years.  Over that time period, he has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students who now hold professor positions in the United States, Europe and Asia or work in the medical laser industry.  He has authored more than one-hundred seventy-five peer-reviewed publications, is the inventor of more than fifty-five issued United States and foreign patents and co-founded three companies.  In 2016, he was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors.

Matthew Brenner, MD: Dr. Matthew Brenner is a clinical professor of medicine at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. He conducts research in pulmonary medicine, critical care, sleep apnea, and cyanide poisoning, and antidotes at UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic. Learn More!

William Armstrong, MD: Dr. William B. Armstrong's primary clinical interests are in head and neck cancer surgery, thyroid, and parathyroid surgery. Dr. Armstrong has a strong interest in minimally invasive procedures to treat head and neck tumors including endoscopic and robotic approaches to head and neck and thyroid tumors. Learn More!

Kate McCartney, MD: As the director of the anesthesiology residency program, Dr. Katherine McCartney is responsible for the “4U” Didactic program, which are full days dedicated to education for each resident class. Amir A Hakimi, BS: Amir obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then went to medical school at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. During this time, he became involved in clinical and translational research under the mentorship of Dr. Brian Wong. Amir has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and he programmed a medical application for the iPhone to expedite the diagnosis of ocular injury.

Rick Ho: Rick, who designed the BVC logo, is currently a Senior Graphic Designer for Patina Restaurant Group based in New York City. Previously, he was a graphic designer at The Orange County Register in California. You can find more projects he's worked on at rickho.com.

MJM Madou, PhD: Dr. Madou’s team developed the VentiVader (Mr. Ehsan Shamloo, Dr. Alexandra Peribikovsky, Dr. Horacio Kido). The technology is now being transferred to student groups at UCI and at the John Hines Foundation for further optimization and commercialization for use in developing countries. Dr. Madou’s team is working with Phil Felgner ‘s team on integrating Coronavirus antigen and antibody arrays with CD fluidics for a complete POC COVID testing solution. Learn More!

Tryphon Georgiou, PhD: Tryphon T. Georgiou is a UCI Distinguished Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UCI. Educated at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and the University of Florida, Gainesville, Dr. Georgiou has received the George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society four times. He's a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).  Learn More!

Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, PhD: Dr. Bandyopadhyay, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, earned his BSc in Chemistry from Presidency College, and MSc in Biochemistry from Calcutta University. During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic Amitabha oversaw the development of three products by incubated companies of IIT Kanpur which were commercialized on a large scale, namely ICU Ventilator, N-95 grade masks, and an advanced disinfection chamber. Learn More!

Elliot Hui, PhD: Dr. Hui, an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UCI, received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from MIT and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Berkeley. In 2008, he joined the faculty at UC Irvine researching microfabrication and microfluidics to control biological systems dynamically at the microscale. He is a recipient of the 2013 DARPA Young Faculty Award and the 2014 JALA Ten Breakthroughs in Innovation. His research laboratory contributed to BVC by developing the first servo-motor driven open-source ambulatory bag rescue ventilator. Learn More!

Vincent Zaballa: Vincent is a PhD student in the Hui Lab at UC Irvine. Previously a Whitaker Fellow at Imperial College London in the Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship module, and Entrepreneur Fellow at Fannin Innovation Studio. Vincent worked with a team of researchers in the Hui Lab to develop a 3D printed ventilator setup. Learn More!

Hong-Lin Du, MD, Ph.D: Trained in the fields of anesthesiology and MBA, Hong-Lin is the president of Nihon Kohden OrangeMed, Inc. in California. His team recently developed the NKV-550 ventilator that can be operated by clinicians outside of contagious patient rooms to reduce the chance of caregivers’ exposure, which is the first of its class cleared by the US FDA.  He used his expertise to provide as-needed advice to the Bridge Ventilator project.

Lily Chen: Lily Chen is currently a medical student at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. She graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with a B.S. in Bioengineering, which in part inspired her passion for integrating medicine and technology. At the BVC, she has been involved in drafting prototypes and participating in discussions to refine goals, designs, and scalability challenges.

Ehsan Shamloo Aliabadi, Ph.D:  Dr. Aliabadi a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of California in Irvine. Being experienced in product development, chemistry, microfluidics, DNA and protein assay development, he is currently working as a senior scientist at a start-up company developing a point of care serology testing for COVID19 detection.
